Low-band 5G can travel relatively long distances, making it useful for providing widespread coverage. The tradeoff is speed.

In fact, Verizon says its low-band 5G Nationwide service offers speeds similar to 4G LTE.

That means seeing a regular 5G icon doesn't necessarily mean you've suddenly unlocked dramatically faster internet.

Mid-band 5G

Mid-band 5G offers a better balance of speed and coverage.

This is where you'll find some of the faster 5G services carriers advertise. For example, AT&T uses mid-band spectrum for much of its 5G+ service, while Verizon uses C-band as part of 5G Ultra Wideband.

T-Mobile's faster Ultra Capacity network is typically represented by 5G UC on compatible phones.

If you've noticed 5G UC, 5G UW or 5G+ appear on your phone, you're connecting to one of your carrier's higher-capacity 5G services.

High-band 5G

High-band 5G, often called mmWave, can deliver extremely fast speeds, but its coverage is much more targeted.

You'll often find it in places where lots of people gather, like airports, stadiums and entertainment districts. AT&T, for example, says its high-band 5G+ is used in these types of high-traffic locations

2. The 5G Network Could Be Congested

Ever notice your phone works perfectly in one location most of the time, then becomes painfully slow during a concert, football game or busy evening?

Cell towers have a limited amount of capacity. When a lot of people in the same area are trying to stream, scroll, upload and download at once, speeds can drop.

Think of it like traffic.

How to Fix Slow 5G

If your phone says 5G but feels suspiciously like 3G's distant cousin, there are a few things worth trying.

1. Test your actual speed

Start by finding out how your connection is really performing.

Don't judge it by the 5G icon or number of bars alone. Run a speed test and look at your actual download and upload speeds.

2. Compare 5G and LTE

If your phone allows you to select LTE instead of 5G, try both connections from the same location.

Run a speed test on 5G, switch to LTE and test again.

If LTE consistently wins, you may simply have a stronger LTE connection in that location.

3. Move somewhere else

Try moving near a window or stepping outside.

If your speed suddenly improves, your location or the building you're inside could be weakening your signal.

4. Toggle Airplane Mode

Turn Airplane Mode on, wait a few seconds and turn it back off.

This forces your phone to reconnect to the cellular network and can sometimes fix a connection that's acting up.

5. Restart your phone

Yes, we're giving you the classic "turn it off and turn it back on" advice.

But there's a reason it's classic.

Restarting your phone can resolve temporary network or software issues and is worth trying before you spend an hour investigating your carrier's network.

If your data tends to slow down specifically during busy periods, look at your plan's data policies.

Also look for any high-speed data thresholds. Deprioritization and throttling aren't the same thing: deprioritization depends on network conditions, while throttling intentionally limits your speed after certain conditions or usage thresholds are met.
